The idea behind this is that people might be encouraged to donate – with
a tax-deductible contribution – specifically for a stallion whose owner they know. Depending
on the cost of the gelding procedure, funding in this manner might be easy to secure; the more people who donate, the less
each has to give. Directed donations that exceed the cost of the specific horse’s need will be rolled
into the general funds for gelding breeding stallions. All donations that are sent by people other than
the horse’s owner will be acknowledged to the donor as tax-deductible.
The process is similar to the one in place for breeders in that we require a completed
application form and photo:
1. Stallion owner completes
the Directed Donations Application Form and mails it, with a recent photo of the stallion, to SGS
2 2. SGS contacts the stallion’s
owner to ensure the horse can undergo a simple castration (i.e., both testicles have dropped)
3. SGS will provide, upon request, a flyer that the owner can distribute as he/she sees fit
4. SGS awaits funds targeted for the stallion; owner awaits word from SGS
5. Upon receiving adequate funds, SGS contacts the owner with
the go-ahead to make the appointment with the veterinarian of the owner’s choice
6. The veterinarian bills SGS the approved amount, and SGS will pay the vet
Stallion owners
can use their creativity to raise funds (e.g., bake sales, letters to friends/family, donations in lieu of gifts, etc.), but
will not receive a tax-deductible donation for themselves due to IRS regulations. Regardless of the method
used to solicit from others, all checks/money orders/Paypal donations should be made payable
directly to Stallion to Gelding Support, not the horse’s owner, and designated
with the stallion’s and owner’s names. Upon receipt, SGS will send a tax letter
to the donor.
In the event adequate funding is not received, the owner may elect to apply the funds
SGS has received to the total cost and pay the difference directly to the veterinarian, or may elect to have the funds go
to SGS’s general fund to help stop breeding.
